Blog - Evolution of oneM2M IoT Standardization

Blog discusses latest developments in oneM2M standardization and how industry stakeholders in India are helping promote adoption of IoT product certification on a local scale.

The Goal of oneM2M as IoT Standard – A Common Machine-to-Machine Service Layer

Internet of Things (IoT) is still an evolving technology but as more and more IoT products are developed, they need to be compliant with the latest standards for robustness and security. OneM2M is the leading global standardization body developing technical specifications for machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. The main goal of these specifications is to create a common machine-to-machine service layer that can be easily embedded within IoT hardware and software solutions to enable all devices to communicate with the M2M application servers.

OneM2M technical specifications cover requirements, architecture, protocols and API specifications, security solutions, interoperability, and IoT technologies that cover various domains from healthcare, transportation, manufacturing, public and residential applications, logistics, autonomous transportation to among others.

Adoption of oneM2M as IoT Standard for India

Several international bodies and organizations have been actively developing and updating these specifications to create a robust and easy-to-use, portable common service layer for oneM2M. oneM2M is a global standard which has been adopted by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies. In addition, ITU has also released some specifications for interoperability of platforms.

In India, the Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India (TSDSI) was founded in 2013, to develop and promote India-specific requirements, and provide leadership for telecommunications-related standardization needs. With the Indian government focused on the creation of smart cities and a local IoT ecosystem, there is a strong demand for standardized IoT solutions. TSDSI, a partner in the oneM2M project, and the Center for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), are both actively involved in the development of oneM2M based implementations in India.

In order to help speed-up the adoption process, the Telecommunication Engineering Center (TEC) and the Indian government organized an interactive workshop in June, 2019 at the TEC Campus in Delhi, for industry expert to discuss developments in the implementation of oneM2M technology, its deployment in smart cities, along with latest tools for testing and certification of oneM2M products and services.

Workshop topics included:

  • Update on the IoT/M2M standardization efforts at TEC, Delhi and how interoperability standards will aid the development of an IoT ecosystem and smart cities.

  • Presentation by Dr. Josef Blanz (Qualcomm) discussing the importance of interworking of oneM2M with IEEE, 3GPP and IETF protocols.

  • oneM2M testing and certification update by Subhash Gajare (Spirent) on the latest testing activities carried out in oneM2M via plugfests arranged by ETSI, TTA, and SDOs, highlighting the importance of interoperability, conformance testing, and the need for certification.

  • oneM2M specifications used in Contineo AI (Artificial Intelligence) and IoT AEP (Application Enablement Platform) presented by Shilpa Vyapari (Indicus Software).

  • oneM2M deployment update from South Korea, covering the challenges and benefits of oneM2M presented by SeungMyeong Jeong (KETI).

  • Insights into oneM2M deployments presented by Nigel Upton & Dale Seed (InterDigital), explaining the importance of oneM2M interworking with other specifications and protocols.

Maximizing the Potential of IoT and M2M

oneM2M specifications include best practices followed by Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) around the world, which make them more robust and scalable in order to interwork with existing platforms. The workshop emphasized the urgent need for oneM2M standardization and interoperability between various industries on a global scale to help avoid silos.

Participating organizations called for IoT standardization, as it will greatly facilitate IoT deployments and the introduction of smart cities in India. They also welcomed an early adaptation of the oneM2M certification process once the standard is adopted, with test labs across the country providing access to the latest tools for testing and certification.

As the first official Test Tool Provider for oneM2M, Spirent will play a vital role in offering a standardized and certified testing solution to ensure interoperability and reliability of IoT products. With oneM2M certification, IoT device manufacturers, developers and suppliers gain confidence that their communication devices, services and associated software will pass oneM2M requirements in terms of interoperability and compliance.
