Consider a powerful data center set up to host a cloud. On the hardware side, there are dozens of racks filled with servers and switches. Maybe hundreds of racks, each packed with 1U pizza boxes and blade chasses. Millions of dollars of CPU, memory, storage, cabling, load balancing, redundant power, and Ethernet connectivity.

As the complexity of interaction between software serving different purposes is evolving with cloud computing and virtualization, so is the need for validation solutions and supporting methodologies. Conventional test tools were not designed to test “hypervisors”—the cornerstone of virtualization.

Cloud Services whether SaaS, IaaS, CaaS, VDI, or PaaS are adding incredible diversity in both the number of providers and services offered. Most of this ecosystem is running on a handful of virtual platforms—or Hypervisors—from vendors such as VMware, Amazon, and Microsoft, or from an open source platform like KVM. Compared to traditional server-client applications running over traditional IP networking products, virtualization platforms are comparatively new. They are also considerably less tested in terms of network application performance as they run over standard x86 based server hardware, opposed to purpose built proprietary hardware from networking equipment vendors.
